hhope this help please bad english sorry
For example, I created a map, and I used various sprites in this map. After it was finished, it was uploaded onto a [LaG] server and I joined the server to test the map. Others joined after that as well, and many of the players that joined complained about the sprites that were used in random places and I didn't understand what they were talking about. Later on, my friend took a screenshot of this and showed it to me, and I saw a huge, stretched out toilet sprite instead of the original sprite file, which was a red load. Another toilet sprite also replaced a ladder sprite that I used in the map as well.
I don't have a clue as to why this happens but I'm sure that it has something to do with the map transferring.
Some server prankstersuse the toilet gfx to mess with players
they rename the toilet to something common and then host there server with popular map and edit it a bit
just rename the file and you are done
This is just a filename issue, well the possibility could be that filetransfer is skipping certain files for clients who has lots of latency at the time they're downloading the map content; I've seen this in action alot of times. For example if there is 16 files in the map's total resource, then if the client joins it says that client is downloading 12 files... that might be the reason why clients sometimes don't see some sprites, or hear sounds.
there are two simple rules to avoid problems with that:
1. NEVER EVER edit existing sprites/sounds without changing their name! If you want to edit a sprite you have to create a new one with a new name. Don't just edit it.
2. Care about unique names/paths. There are two ways:
- save sounds/images for your map in an extra subfolder (best: with the name of your map)
- add your name/the name of the map to the filename
example:
your map is called "mysuperbmap.map" and you want to use your own sound in it which is called lol.ogg
bad idea: simply put lol.ogg into the sfx folder (chances are high that there is another mapper who uses ANOTHER lol.ogg!)
make a folder in sfx called "mysuperbmap" and put lol.ogg into this folder (mysuperbmap/lol.ogg)
or call it "mysuperbmap_lol.ogg"
Like this <parent folder CS2D>/sfx/maps/mysuperbmap/<sounds go here>. It will be extra tidy!
its because its the same file name, its like, someone has a file named "shark", and you also have a file named "shark", for you its a shark, but for some reason, the other player "shark" file is a toilet or something very random
I remember when I joined a CS2D server "eG clan soccer" or something. Some eG clan member basicly ripped my football/soccer map and made it worse. The pathetic thing I found was inside the briefing, it was written that "eG | sh@w!k" created the map. I found a couple of my sprites in the map aswell, people always steal from the best mapper or graphic artist without giving proper credits to original author, as always.
It's a map problem...
Use what has already been said within this topic... DC said it well, make a subfolder for your sprites, sounds that you use in your maps then you can paint a snake and name the file "snake.bmp" and put it in your subfolder of your map.
