i had this problem some times ago in another map. try to just burn some animals, half your island will burn down, then the lagg is gone! At lowest settings and after a few days on the island, fps goes down as the animal population goes up. Lions run underwater. Animals are colonising without any boundaries. unplayable. That's really a shame. I try to read the sys files but heck, too hard.
This map looks very promising though.

Hm... this mod has some really amazing features. Not perfect at all, but parts are already quite good!
Especially that 'beast'. AWESOME! Be true, where did you get it? I mean... this silly scaled crab besides a beast like that...
Seems just like you've learned modelling through the hole mod developing process.

This is not timely, but anyone else hunting this down might like to be able to find it. The "beast" model is by Psionic, and is available at http://www.psionic3d.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.php?album=2&pos=0. Hope that helps.
1. Open units.inf file by a Windows Notepad.
2. Find UNIT 1 (player) parameters.
3. Find "SPEED" option, and write there higher value.
That's all.
Aethalia - go to the units.inf, find two instance of setting player speed (player_speed or something) and change it to desirable value, just as wojtek961 said. Make sure to edit units.inf file that is in VC mod folder, not in Stranded folder! I did it, it works.
As for lag issues in my mod - I checked my map for possible errors (like wrong definitions of spawn points), I reduced the number of fish and so on. I seriously can't find what could cause a lag.
I prepared a smaller map, I have to test it a little. I'm going to upload mod with minor tweaks (like players speed) and new map, if my testing shows no errors. Perhaps its better to make a few smaller maps, that one big laggy monster.
I'll keep you posted.
PS. I see that new version of Stranded Ext also implements fall damage feature, nice!
